Volunteer Program Overview LAYN accomplishes its mission by providing street outreach, food, shelter and transitional living programs with a professional, caring staff in a nurturing and safe environment. The goals for each youth are to successfully complete the permanent transition away from street life to a safe and secure living environment to fully participate in society. LAYN’s volunteer program helps to support the staff in the fulfillment of these goals. Please read about the areas of support before completing your volunteer application. Areas of Volunteer Support
LAYN’s administrative team is always in need of volunteers to help with various tasks including; data entry, answering phones, filing, supply inventory, etc. Administrative support is needed Monday-Fridays during office hours and there are many shifts available to work with various schedules.
In order to provide our youth with a well rounded continuum of care we like to offer various recreational activities for our clients. Volunteers who would like to help in this area could help supervise youth on hikes, walks, yoga/ Pilates/exercise classes and other recreational activities.
LAYN understands that some volunteers are only able to be of service for short term projects and we have plenty of opportunities to make use of their time with “Done in a Day” projects. These projects are offered on a monthly basis and include things like; helping paint a building/bedrooms, landscaping, donation sorting, facility maintenance, supply organization and so forth. Please check the volunteer opportunity calendar for the next “Done in a Day” project.
A major source of LAYN’s funding comes in the form of fundraising events. These events usually require a great amount of volunteer support from the planning stages to day of event support through to post event follow up. LAYN is always in need of reliable event volunteers to help with these fun events.
LAYN aims to provide educational opportunities to our youth through things like, tutoring, college tours, book clubs and resume writing workshops. If you would like to offer your help and experience in any area of educational enrichment please be sure to mention this in your volunteer application.
LAYN aims to provide outlets for creative expression for our clients. We have a need for volunteers who can provide assistance with art projects, scrapbooking and music lessons (guitar, piano, etc.). If you have any ideas or talents you would like to share with LAYN we are welcome to hearing about them.
Our street outreach team serves the homeless youth in the Lost Angeles by providing basic supplies, food and information about available resources. Volunteers can sign up to join the outreach team on the dates listed on the volunteer calendar.
A significant need for LAYN is the donation of meals for our youth. Any interested volunteer or group is welcome to sponsor a meal in one of our three locations. It is up to the volunteer or group to decide if they would like to bring in the ingredients and prepare the meal themselves, bring in prepared food from a restaurant or provide a donation to purchase the ingredients for our staff to prepare. If you are interested in meal sponsorship please see the meal sponsorship form available on the website.
The Mentor Program consists of volunteering your time to develop a one-on-one relationship with the youth in our program. By becoming a Mentor you can help these youth grow, learn, and motivate them to reach their goals. LAYN seeks positive adults who demonstrate a healthy moral character and a sincere desire to help young people who are seriously at-risk and disadvantaged. LAYN Volunteer Enrollment All volunteers are requested to pay a onetime volunteer enrollment fee of $75. This fee includes a background check, a volunteer t-shirt and the orientation training. In order to comply with Community Care licensing requirements all volunteers with LAYN successfully pass a background check called a Live Scan and test negative for TB. The Live Scan application, TB test form and directions are available once a volunteer has enrolled in the program. We appreciate the contribution of each volunteer and their efforts in supporting our mission.
