Jim MacGaffey, Psy.D. - Clinical Director

Dr. Jim, one of LAYN’s two clinical psychologists, has worked at LAYN since 1995 providing individual, family and group counseling for the youth and clinical supervision of all three LAYN facilities.  As an expert in the field of runaway and homeless youth issues, he also advocates for the youth and LAYN in the community.  One of his ongoing goals is to create greater awareness that the problem behaviors of at-risk youth are more the result of traumatic lives of abuse and neglect and not mental illness.  “What the youth need most to succeed is appropriate support, nurturing and guidance.”

The kids are amazing and truly inspirational to watch grow and strive to reach their goals and dreams. I have been lucky to know each one of them."

Dr. Nikolaos Stefanidis, Director of Clinical Training

Dr Nik is the Director of Clinical Training at LAYN, providing training and supervision for the front line staff and first year Social Work interns from the University of Southern California. Dr. Nik has given many lectures on the attachment antecedents and the psychological impact on youth, at home and abroad. He has authored a number of articles, as well as, chaired or served as a committee member on doctoral dissertations.  He is also the Clinical Director of the Community Trauma Treatment Center for Runaway and Homeless Youth.  One of Dr. Nik’s favorite responsibilities is street outreach. Every other Thursday night from 10pm to about 1am Dr. Nik and his interns “street walk” in the Hollywood area in search of homeless disenfranchised youth who roam the streets of Hollywood in search of kinship only to fall prey to drug dealers and pimps. After 20 years of affiliation with LAYN he says: “ It is a very fulfilling and rewarding experience to work with the youth that we work with. There is much talent and humanity that often gets overlooked when we focus only on their problem behaviors. We need to be mindful and build on the youths' competencies“
